Kerry “Kid K” Wood Retires from MLB

Written by Carlos Solis on . Posted in Main, MLB, Sports

Today, Kerry Wood has announced his retirement.

It was nearly a lifetime ago that a Kerry Wood cemented his legacy with Chicago and major league baseball.  He was just a small town kid called up to play in the big leagues and left an indelible mark on everyone who would call themselves Cubs fans.

Making his fifth career start in MLB, Kerry Woo threw a one-hit 20 strikeout game against the Astros that many in baseball call the most dominant performance ever by a pitcher.  It was supposed to be a sign of what should’ve been a promising career and building block for the Cubs chance of finally winning a World Series.

Instead, Kerry Wood has dealt with surgeries, multiple stints on the DL, and more recently, just being bad at pitching.

It’s really sad to see a once great pitcher that had so much promise go out like this.

For his career, Kerry Wood has posted a 3.67 ERA with 1581 strikeouts and 1379.2 innings pitched.

Many were wondering why Kerry Wood decided to play for the Cubs, a team that has little to no chance of winning the division or wild-card, let alone a World Series.  Some would say it was his love for Chicago, others would say it was his desire to be “Mr. Cub.”  While it is debatable why he would sign with Chicago and not with a contending team, you can always point a finger at Tom Ricketts.

The Cubs owner himself is a huge Cub fan and is obviously endeared to what Kerry Wood has done and what he meant to the franchise.  This is a move that was not done by the new president Theo Epstein and his staff.  It was more of a move to get Kerry to come back to Chicago and finish his career here.

That part is complete, however this is not how Kerry nor the Cubs would’ve liked to see him end his career.

For this entire season…Wood has been bad.  8.64 ERA in 8 innings pitched bad.  You can tell he was frustrated that his command was completely lost and let that anger vent by throwing his hat and glove into the Wrigley Field faithful after another bad outing.

I’ll do my best to remember Kerry Wood as a pitcher who almost gave the Cubs a World Series appearance back in 1998.  I wish him the best of luck as he is sure to try out broadcasting or doing some kind of work for the Cubs as an ambassador.

Thanks for the memories Kid K.

Saints GM Had Opposing Teams Bugged

As if things couldn’t get any worse for the New Orleans Saints, its turns out to just get more ugly for the NFL franchise that was just penalized for instituting a bounty system that resulted in the loss of their head coach for the whole season.  ESPN is reporting that Mickey Loomis, Saints GM (who is facing an 8 game suspension for the bounty scandal) had an electronic device in his Superdome suite that had been secretly re-wired to enable him to eavesdrop on visiting coaching staffs for nearly three NFL seasons.

More Uglyness at Penn State

In case you didn’t know, or were too invested in the “happy valley” fairy tale that was force fed to you, Penn State has been embroiled in a bombshell scandal that has rocked the NCAA and the USA to a seedy, corrupt, elitist, unaccountable world of lies and deceit that has preyed on both adults and children to perpetuate nothing more than bigger investors and more money for rich people.

Good, but not Good Enough

The Chicago Bulls lost two games in a row and now they are the worst team in the NBA and have no shot of even getting out of the 1st round of the playoffs because Luol Deng is basically playing with one hand, Rip Hamilton is a fossil, and Derrick Rose has had a calamity of injuries that make Wile E Coyote look like a safe investment for a lucrative life insurance plan.

Blackhawks Clinch Playoff Spot

Let it be written (are you writing this down?) that won this Saturday night, a hard fought 5-4 victory over the Nashville Predators,  a team that lost 20 games in a row (ok, not really) and had nearly everything go against them while on a scathing road trip; managed to play a decent (Chicago gave up a 4 goal lead in the 2nd period….not a good sign) game to clinch a playoff berth for the 2nd time since they hoisted the Stanley Cup.
